How to Choose the Right Contractor in Accra

Hiring the wrong contractor can turn your dream renovation into a nightmare. In Accra’s growing construction market, there are plenty of options — but not all contractors deliver quality, honesty, or value. Here is how to make the right choice.

1. Check Credentials and Registration

A legitimate contractor should be registered with the Ghana Institute of Engineers (GhIE) or the Ghana Contractors Association. Always ask for proof of registration before signing anything.

2. Ask for a Portfolio of Previous Work

Any experienced contractor should be able to show you photos or references from previous projects. If they cannot, that is a warning sign. Where possible, visit a completed project in person.

3. Get Multiple Quotes

Never accept the first quote you receive. Get at least three quotes for any project. Be wary of quotes that are significantly lower than others — they often cut corners on materials or labour quality.

4. Insist on a Written Contract

A detailed contract should include the scope of work, materials to be used, project timeline, payment schedule, and what happens if there are delays or disputes. Never work with a contractor who refuses to put things in writing.

5. Avoid Large Upfront Payments

A common contractor scam in Ghana involves collecting a large deposit and then disappearing or doing substandard work. A reasonable deposit is 20–30% upfront, with payments tied to project milestones.
